On Friday afternoon, he decided to thank the team's coaches for getting the uniforms ready, but for some reason, he forgot to thank the trainers. Barkley said, "I'm so old, we used to take a shower in our jerseys," referring to the team's tradition of washing uniforms after each game.
Sir Charles was mid-sentence when his co-analyst on Inside the NBA, Kenny Smith, interrupted to ask if it was true that he showered while wearing his uniform.
Hold on, there's a timeout. "There was never a time when you could get away with it," Smith remarked.
As Smith called Barkley out on his audacious remark, his coworkers, Clark Kellogg and Greg Gumbel, laughed hysterically. “Stop! I can't believe you're making this up. Smith remarked. It's highly unlikely that you were instructed to do so while wearing your uniform. You have to be joking!
Barkley listened to Kellogg's request that Smith delay his response long enough for Sir Charles to complete.
When Barkley initially entered the NBA, he and his teammates used commercial flights. I mean, when you had to play the night before and fly the next morning, when were you planning on washing your uniform? You washed your own uniform, didn't you?
He explained that players typically showered in their uniforms after games, then left them at the hotel for commercial airlines to pick up the following day.
Certainly, "He's making this up!" What Smith just said was restated.
Barkley asked them, "Y'all were playing in crazy uniforms?" and seemed genuinely interested in the answer.
When asked how one should clean their uniform, Kellogg advised against doing so. Certainly that's a possibility. You can keep it clean even if you don't use a shower.
In other words, "You don't have to have it on!" Smith remarked.
The three people at the desk burst out laughing at Barkley's response, "No, but it's easier to do that way," and Smith had to get out of his seat. To which the respondent exclaimed, "Are you kidding me?! No!” - Kellogg.
