Actor Who Played Mr. Bean Says He Feels “Duped” by Electric Cars

Electric cars have gained immense popularity lately, with numerous advocates heralding them as the ultimate "future" of transportation.

However, not everyone is convinced of their perfection, as persistent battery issues continue to plague the industry. Surprisingly, a prominent celebrity has voiced their disappointment, emphasizing the magnitude of the letdown.

Renowned British comedian Rowan Atkinson, popularly known as Mr. Bean, has voiced his reservations about electric vehicles, shedding light on their perceived lack of character. Atkinson acknowledged the impressive attributes of electric cars, including their speed, quietness, and previously affordable operating costs.

However, he admitted to feeling somewhat deceived as he delved deeper into the subject, discovering that electric motoring may not be the absolute environmental solution it is often portrayed to be.

From Mechical:

Rowan Atkinson holds an advanced degree in electrical engineering from The Queen's College, Oxford, and a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Newcastle University.

Atkinson went on to say that of course, electric cars have zero exhaust emissions, which is a welcome development, especially with regard to air quality in city centers.

But if you zoom out a bit and see a bigger picture that includes the making of the car, the situation is very different.  Bean also cited a video released by Volvo in the lead-up to the Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021 showing that lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric vehicles could increase greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70 percent.

Atkinson has also said that other options still exist, such as solid-state or hydrogen-based fuels, but it is society's relationship with cars that needs overhauling as much as the engineering.

Atkinson went on to say that he is not opposed to electric vehicles by any means but thinks they need to do more and advised those on the fence.

We also share a sense of disillusionment regarding electric vehicles.

It seems as though these vehicles are aggressively pushed upon us, not just by manufacturers, but also by our government.
