Berkeley Student Saved Thousands in Rent by Commuting Via Plane

This is a sad and depressing tale that's become all too familiar in our modern, liberal-run cities - unfortunately. These places have become so pricey to live in, it can actually work out cheaper to commute by air daily, instead of trying to rent an apartment - and forget trying to actually own a home, that’s just crazy talk. And this was the reality for one Berkeley student who turned into a bonafide "airplane commuter" for his college classes. Sure, he was traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco, two notoriously costly cities, but clearly, the City by the Bay takes the crown for being the pricier of the two.

The San Francisco Bay prices are notoriously high, but one graduate student managed to avoid the lofty prices. He simply commuted 92,089 miles from his home in Los Angeles to the University of California, Berkeley.

The super commuter first shared his story two months ago in a now-viral Reddit post titled “I survived living in LA and commuting to Cal by plane over the past academic year to save on rent, AMA.”

Going by Reddit user “greateranglia,” he said he came up with the “crazy idea” to avoid the expensive Bay Area rent while attending his one-year Civil Engineering program. He knew he wanted to return to Los Angeles after graduation since he was already living “comfortably” there.

My classmates, instead of asking ‘What’s for dinner?’ they would ask ‘When’s your flight back?' ” the student, who shared his first name as Bill, told Los Angeles’ news outlet KTLA.

In a post on the pilot forum FlyerTalk, the super commuter wrote that student housing near Berkeley was going to cost him at least $1,600 per month without utilities and that he had to be there for 12 months, even though his program was technically only 10 months and wasn’t required to be on campus every day.

He was required to attend classes on campus three times a week – but sometimes flew up five times a week if there was an in-person meeting or event.

In the post, Bill said he purchased all his plane tickets months ahead of time and just canceled them the night before if his schedule changed. Thanks to his elite status with Alaska and Southwest, he had access to same-day flight changes, so he’d book the cheapest flight of the day and just call the airline to change to a better-scheduled flight.

Super commuting lives up to its name – the student said the door-to-door commute time was around four to five hours one-way. To make his 8 a.m. class, he said he woke up at 3:30 a.m. to catch a 5:30 a.m. flight. He would sometimes take the last flight out if he had to stay late for a project.

He calculated that he took 238 flights and spent about 52 days commuting – saving thousands in rent money.

“This is probably one of the craziest thing (sic) I've done in my life, and I'm so glad I made it through, without missing ANY classes, that itself is a miracle,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, here’s a new video from the glorious liberal utopia of Los Angeles.

What on earth is going on in California? How is this state still able to survive at this rate? Not only is San Fransisco expensive as all get out, but it’s a cesspool, to boot. Why would anybody tolerate this?

They still keep voting for it, it’s stunning. I guess it’s true, you really do get what you vote for.
