The 656-foot-long bulk carrier has been loaded with approximately 30,000 to 40,000 tons of coal and is currently en route to Asia, where it will be burned in coal-fired power plants.
From National Post:
Flagged in Cyprus and owned by the Monaco-based firm Safe Bulkers, the ship got its name because it’s reported to be cleaner-burning than its fellow bulk carriers.
But the MV Climate Justice does carry an awful lot of coal; between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes. Once burned, that size of a load will produce between 60,000 and 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide — equivalent to about as much as the per-capita annual emissions of 5,000 Canadians.
The ship filled up at Neptune Terminals, a facility within sight of the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge that specializes in the export of coal from the B.C. Interior and potash from Saskatchewan. The presence of the oddly named coal carrier was noted by a fellow mariner and posted this week to the Facebook group BC Coastal Mariners.
Neptune shouldn’t be confused with Westshore Terminals, an even larger coal facility in Tsawwassen located within sight of the primary terminals for B.C. Ferries transiting the Strait of Georgia.
When the exports from both these facilities are added together, the Port of Vancouver ranks as the single largest coal port in North America. Although the exported coal is almost exclusively burned in Japan, Korea and China, its annual emissions easily dwarf the carbon footprint of the province that exported it.
According to the latest numbers from Vessel Finder, Climate Justice is currently steaming across the Pacific and is expected to dock in Yeosu, Korea by Oct. 18.
This is a prime example of liberal logic on full display here...
How on earth do these individuals, who are deeply concerned about climate change, actually justify this?
