Stacey Abrams, a Democrat running for governor of Georgia, has taken a stand on the abortion debate by claiming that a fetal heartbeat at six weeks is “no such thing.” As she competes against Gov. Brian Kemp in the next election, Ms. Abrams is stepping up her criticism of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that deemed abortion a federal constitutional right.
There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks, Ms. Abrams said incendiariously this week at a gathering in Atlanta. She dismissed heartbeat footage as “a generated sound aimed to persuade people that males have the right to take control of a woman’s body.”
Talk about spreading falsehoods! If she shares this on social media, she should be banned or have her account blocked until she takes it down.
Ms. Abrams highlighted how extremely different her opinions on abortion rights and restrictions are from those of Mr. Kemp as a veteran pro-choice advocate. The Republican National Committee posted a reminder that Abrams supports abortion with NO LIMITS with a video of her heartbeat remark.
Following last summer’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which upheld a Mississippi law, Mr. Kemp signed legislation in 2019 outlawing the majority of abortions performed after six weeks of pregnancy.
On the same day that the Atlanta Journal Constitution published a survey showing Mr. Kemp leading Ms. Abrams by a margin of 50% to 42%, Ms. Abrams made her remarks.
I don’t know who is advising Abrams, but they are steering her away from using the abortion election issue in a profitable way. Someone involved in her campaign is a women’s rights activist who has pushed their own agenda into the story while ignoring the actual motivations behind voters’ choices. She is categorically mistaken on heartbeat, which is embarrassing to Abrams. The only saving grace is that Abrams will lose this election by a wide majority, making it impossible for her to challenge the results with allegations of voting fraud. The campaign is tone deaf.
The Mayo Clinic has proven the reality that a heartbeat may be seen as early as three weeks into a pregnancy. Everyone who has endured an ultrasound understands that the heartbeat is not artificial. Due to her complete ignorance and promotion of harmful misinformation, Abrams ought to be barred from running for ANY office.
She really isn’t arguing there isn’t a heartbeat as much as she is suggesting that men “create” them to dominate women. According to her, the noises the woman is hearing are fake recordings. purely for male control over precisely what a woman is? Why are individuals like these permitted to interact with our government? It defies logic that she is even a candidate for governor in the eyes of the Democrats. And there are already WAY TOO MANY individuals like him working in our government. If these individuals are not expelled, our country is doomed. It has now spiraled out of control.
The Democrat, who gained notoriety as a champion of voting rights, barely lost the 2018 governor’s race to Mr. Kemp by 50,000 votes, surpassing expectations in a state that had been ruled by Republicans for a number of decades.
Republicans who campaigned as strong pro-life candidates in challenging general elections around the country are now at a disadvantage as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Democrats have a good reason to think that the abortion debate will serve as a good distraction from more pressing problems like the economy, inflation, and crime. The number of women registering to vote has also increased in several states.
The decision’s potential impact on racial inequities in Georgia and elsewhere is unknown, though. In a poll conducted by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, only 5% of likely voters identified abortion as their top political concern.
Nearly 50% of likely voters said they would be more likely to back a candidate who favors maintaining access to abortion, according to the survey.
The cost of living (20%), threats to democracy (17%), jobs and the economy (16%), immigration (14%), guns (10%), crime (7%) and climate change (6%) were the top worries of voters, followed by abortion (5%) and the economy.
There is no role for the federal government in the abortion debate. Everything not specifically given to the federal government is reserved to the states or the people, according to the constitution. To modify that, a constitutional amendment is required. In the Dobbs case, the Supreme Court made the appropriate decision.
