Former President Trump, according to billionaire Ken Griffin, head of the international investment firm Citadel, is a “three-time loser” who ought to resign from office before the 2024 election.
At the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Tuesday in Singapore, Griffin urged Trump to withdraw from the Republican presidential race to make room for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), whom Griffin has financially supported.
I’d like to think that the Republican Party is prepared to let go of someone who has lost three times for this party, he added.
Griffin’s remarks come as Trump is rumored to be announcing his third bid for the presidency on Tuesday night at his Florida estate Mar-a-Lago.
Republicans’ performance in the midterm elections, in which they failed to take control of the Senate and are likely to achieve a fairly slim majority in the House, has drawn some criticism in the past week.
Numerous Trump-backed candidates have fallen to their Democratic rivals in high-profile contests. Most recently, in the contest for Arizona governor, it was predicted that Republican Kari Lake would lose to Democrat Katie Hobbs.
Blake Masters was defeated by senator Mark Kelly last week (D-Ariz.).
Griffin referred to three defeats: Trump’s loss of the 2020 reelection, the party’s loss of two Georgia Senate seats in the January 2021 runoffs, and this year’s midterm elections.
Griffin expressed his satisfaction with the election results, citing the fact that many voters chose to cast ballots for both Democrats and Republicans and that many of the more extremist candidates lost.
He declared, “This was a victory for democracy.” The midterm elections were a win for “team normal,” according to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) in remarks on Thursday.
DeSantis has emerged as the leading challenger to Trump, and up until recently, surveys constantly showed him finishing second to the outgoing president in a fictitious primary.
Griffin reportedly paid DeSantis $5 million for his reelection, which DeSantis easily won on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg.
