A new record was reached for the month of November when 233,740 illegal aliens were apprehended by border agents at the southern boundary, highlighting the turmoil that existed even before the Title 42 epidemic border deportation strategy was terminated. The figures were released by Homeland Security on Friday night ahead of the holiday weekend.
Significant increases in migrants from Cuba and Nicaragua helped counteract declines in Venezuelans at the border. Children traveling alone and with their families both increased in number.

The acting commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, Troy Miller, attempted to find positives in the data by highlighting the scant numbers of migrants from Mexico and Central America.
“Individuals from Mexico and northern Central America accounted for barely 30% of unique interactions in November,” he added. “This is a considerable decrease from the 53% they represented a year ago, as more migrants are arriving from a number of other countries, including Cuba and Nicaragua.”
Contrary to Cubans and Nicaraguans, who are not subject to expulsion but are typically captured and swiftly released instead, Central Americans are subject to the Title 42 expulsion policy and are therefore simpler to deal with. According to the Border Patrol, they caught 206,239 illegal aliens trying to enter between ports of entry. Another 27,501 people who crossed the border illegally were apprehended by CBP agents.
Less than 30% of the new entrants were expelled under Title 42 because, despite the law’s continued existence, the Biden administration has curtailed the tool’s use.
The use of it had been ordered to halt on December 21 by a federal judge, but Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. issued a stay to give the Supreme Court time to consider taking the case.
