The personal account of former President Donald Trump has been reinstated by Facebook parent company Meta after a two-year suspension following the uprising on January 6. In a blog post published on Wednesday, the firm said that in order to prevent “repeat offenders” from breaking its regulations, “additional guardrails” are being added.
Nick Clegg, vice president of worldwide relations at Meta, stated, “In the case that Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be withdrawn and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the offense.”
The largest social media platform in the world, Facebook also served as a key fundraising tool for Donald Trump’s campaigns, which spent millions on its advertisements in 2016 and 2020. Trump will be able to communicate directly with his 34 million followers, which is significantly more than the 4.8 million people who currently follow him on his own website, Truth Social, thanks to the move, which comes as Trump is gearing up for his third run for the White House. Trump will also be able to resume direct fundraising thanks to the move.

In response to the news, Trump commended Truth Social while criticizing Facebook’s move to ban his account.
“FACEBOOK has just stated that they are restoring my account. Since “deplatforming” your beloved President, me, they have lost billions of dollars in value. A sitting President or anyone else who is not deserving of retaliation should never experience such a thing again! He composed.
He was fired on January 7, a day following the violent uprising in 2021. He was removed from other social media platforms as well, though Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter recently led to his reinstatement. He hasn’t yet tweeted.
Others and civil rights organizations swiftly condemned Meta’s action. Trump’s reinstatement on Facebook sends a message to other public figures with sizable online followings that breaking the law is acceptable and won’t result in long-term repercussions, claimed Heidi Beirich, founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism and a participant in the Real Facebook Oversight Board, a group that has criticized Facebook’s efforts.
Beirich referred to Meta’s choice as “a disaster,” adding, “I am not shocked.” Facebook provided Trump with openings that he exploited. On Facebook, he instigated a revolt. And now he’s returned.
Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP, denounced the choice as a “terrible mistake” and “a perfect example of putting money over people’s safety.”
“It’s very astonishing that Mark Zuckerberg still believes it is not enough to remove someone from his platforms,” he added. “One can spew hatred, feed conspiracies, and instigate a violent rebellion at our nation’s Capitol building.”
However, Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, described the reinstatement as “the right call” because the general public is interested in hearing directly from political candidates, not because the former president has any right to be on the platform.
According to Clegg, given his prior transgressions, Trump now faces harsher punishments for future transgressions. According to our amended protocol, same sanctions “will apply to other public personalities whose accounts are reinstated after suspensions due to social disturbance.”
According to Meta, it won’t take down content posted by Trump or anybody else if it is detrimental and has the potential to trigger incidents like the uprising on January 6 but doesn’t break Facebook’s guidelines. This includes endorsing the QAnon hoax or attempting to smear an upcoming election.
Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram will be reinstated in the upcoming weeks, according to Meta. Trump has been reliant on Truth Social since he was blocked from Twitter and has been banned from other major social media platforms.
Trump has publicly claimed that he has no plans to return to Twitter, but two people familiar with the plans who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private talks said that Trump has been talking about doing so recently.
Facebook remains the most popular social media network in the world and is a remarkably potent political platform, especially among older Americans who are most inclined to vote and donate to campaigns, even though it has been overshadowed culturally by newer competitors like TikTok.
