It has been reported that President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, may soon face charges related to alleged unlawful tax deductions as Republicans continue to look into whether the President himself engaged in criminal efforts to profit from his position and protect his son.
U.S. Attorney for Delaware and 2017 Trump appointee David Weiss is reportedly on the verge of deciding whether to prosecute Hunter for allegedly filing his 2016 and 2017 tax returns late and possibly falsely claiming at least $30,000 in deductions for business expenses, as reported by The New York Times.
The report investigates the president’s son’s alleged unlawful and improper behavior, as well as how prominent conservatives are seeking to link the president to his son’s actions. Investigators have found evidence of communication between Joe Biden and his son regarding the younger Biden’s business dealings, such as when the president learned of his son’s board seat at Burisma and called to tell him, “I hope you know what you’re doing.” However, the report claims that the full scope of investigations has yet to offer Republicans the smoking gun they are looking for.

For instance, Weiss is apparently thinking about filing additional charges against Hunter, this time for making false statements on a federal paperwork required for the purchase of a pistol in the United States in 2018. His denial of drug use might be called into question if there were eyewitnesses, but such a charge is rarely pursued unless it is tacked on to a more substantial probe. The New York Times reports that Hunter’s attorneys have presented data to the Justice Department showing that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware has never sought a separate gun prosecution for lying about drug usage.
The president’s controversial son might face further charges, some of which include his alleged drug use. According to reports, Hunter’s accountant Bill Morgan warned him on October 12 that he owes more than $800,000 in unpaid 2017 personal and corporate taxes. Hunter purchased the firearm on the same day.
Morgan tried again to attract Hunter’s attention the following month by reminding him that both he and Hunter needed to submit their 2016 tax returns. Morgan informed Hunter that the Internal Revenue Service had requested that his passport renewal be denied on the grounds of outstanding tax liens. The publication claims, however, that Hunter’s ability to be prosecuted for tax evasion was hampered because he borrowed the requisite $2 million and paid the IRS the full amount he owed.
Although some of the allegations against the president may be difficult to pursue in court, it doesn’t mean the fresh information doesn’t provide Republicans more ammunition in their quest to implicate and impeach him. Hunter’s ties to both the Ukrainian and Chinese governments are well documented; for example, he is on the board of the Ukrainian oil firm Burisma and has held shares in a Chinese government-affiliated firm in the past. Although proof of such meetings with the president himself has proven difficult to come by.

According to reports, Hunter’s contact at Burisma, Vadym Pozharskyi, wrote a letter to Joe Biden Jr. in 2015, thanking him for “providing an opportunity to meet your father and spent some time together” in halting English. The Republican Party has also attempted to make connections between the president and a Chinese energy magnate (whom Hunter was involved in a failed business venture with). Someone involved in the negotiations of the business venture apparently proposed allocating 10% of the company to the “big man.”
New information about Weiss’s investigation of Hunter emerged just hours after Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the newly elected Republican chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, demanded that the Treasury Department turn over all suspicious activity reports related to the president’s son.
Now, only the U.S. Attorney’s Office knows whether or not the newly discovered circumstances surrounding Hunter’s story of abuse, loss, and failure will result in prosecution. As President Obama considers running for reelection while under intense scrutiny for his handling of sensitive data, it’s clear that the spotlight on Hunter’s head is not good news.
