According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, if the United States discontinues military assistance to his nation, it will “lose NATO” and its status as the world’s dominant power.
In response to a question about the waning popularity of continued support for the war in Ukraine in the United States, Zelensky criticized Americans who do not want to continue sending arms and billions of their taxpayer dollars to his administration during a press conference in Kyiv (Kiev) on the one-year anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of his country.
“They will lose NATO, they will lose the clout of the United States, and they will lose the leadership position that they enjoy in the globe,” Zelesnky warned. “If they do not change their opinion, if they do not understand us, if they do not support Ukraine.”
“They will also lose [Ukraine’s] backing, which consists of 40 million people and millions of kids. Are American kids any different than those here? He asked for it.
Despite the fact that Ukraine is not a member of NATO and the possibility that the conflict could turn from a localized conflict into a larger war between Western powers and the Russian Federation, the United States has sent over $113 billion in military and humanitarian aid to the country since this time last year.
While some Republicans in the House Freedom Caucus have threatened to obstruct funding for Ukraine, like Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, it is uncertain whether such a move would succeed given the neo-con element of the party’s support for the war effort.
A Gallup survey conducted earlier this month found that 47% of Republicans surveyed thought the Biden administration was supporting Ukraine excessively. Democrats, on the other hand, believe that the United States is not doing enough, according to 41% of Democrats, while independents are currently evenly divided, with 35% supporting each position.
In fact, earlier this week a group of Republican members under the leadership of Rep. Michael McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, visited Kiev to express their “support to give Ukraine everything it needs to win.”
Joe Biden was questioned on Friday over the public’s rising concerns over how long the government will continue to invest billions into the infamously corrupt country.
Well, first of all, I’m not sure how many are asking, the 80-year-old Democrat retorted. I am aware of the MAGA crowd. Right-wing Republicans are referring to the idea that we shouldn’t proceed. We are in a position where the price of doing nothing, or of walking away, could be significantly higher than the price of assisting Ukraine in keeping its independence.
During the Trump administration, America’s role as the main contributor to NATO’s budget came under increased scrutiny. The former president questioned why the American people should continue contributing to the defense of European nations that not only did not meet their NATO defense spending obligations but also sent billions to Russia in exchange for energy.
When we’re meant to be defending against Russia, President Trump said in July 2018: “It is very unfortunate when Germany makes a large oil and gas agreement with Russia, and Germany goes and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia. We are defending these nations, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
“We spend a lot of money safeguarding [them]. This has been happening for years. It’s extremely unfair to both our nation and our taxpayers. These nations must step up right away, not over the course of ten years.
Finally, Jens Stoltenberg, the head of NATO, gave credit to Trump for getting $100 billion in new defense expenditure from European members. Mr. Trump has been one of the major voices in America calling for quick peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv, even though he has been successful in increasing military spending both domestically and in Europe. The current leaders in Washington, London, Paris, and Berlin don’t seem particularly eager to put an end to the war any time soon, though.
