College Professor Suspended After Facebook Post: Better To Harm Political Opponents Than Protest Them

Steven Shaviro, a professor at Wayne State University in Michigan, was placed on unpaid leave after he advocated on Facebook for the assassination of political opponents rather than peaceful protest.

According to Fox News, Shaviro wrote on Facebook, "I think it is far more admirable to kill a racist, homophobic, or transphobic speaker than it is to shout them down."

Right-wing organisations "bring such speakers to campus exactly because they want to trigger an incident that discredits the left and offers greater prominence and validation to these terrible views than they could otherwise acquire," he said.

Further, "the demonstrators get blamed instead of the bigoted speaker; the university administration finds a great reason to publicly sympathize with the racists or phobes; and the national and international press have a field day declaring that bigots are the ones being persecuted," the post reads.

The president of Wayne State University, M. Roy Wilson, sent an email to the student body in which he strongly denounced the post and reported it to the authorities.

"We have always stood up for the First Amendment's protection of free speech, but this post goes much beyond what we consider to be acceptable or constitutionally protected expression. At best, it's immoral, and at worst, it's illegal "According to Wilson's email.

"We've forwarded this to the appropriate authorities for further inquiry. We have placed the professor on immediate paid suspension pending their review "There was more to the statement.
