Look: They’re Now Growing Blueberries the Size of Golf Balls

Who doesn't appreciate the burst of flavor from  fresh blueberries, whether tossed into your morning oatmeal, baked into muffins, or simply enjoyed solo? But imagine biting into one  the size of a golf ball—now that's a mouthful!

While many  might hesitate at the thought, curiosity might just nudge you towards sampling what's recently earned the title of the Guinness World Record's largest blueberry. This colossal berry hails from a farm in Australia  renowned for consistently producing oversized fruit without sacrificing flavor.

From Oddity Central:

Picked on November 13, 2023, at Costa’s berry farm in Corindi, New South Wales, the record-breaking blueberry was from the Eterna variety, which is known for yielding consistently large fruit without compromising on flavor. Interestingly, one of the growers in charge of this particular farm said that this blueberry was one of at least 20 fruits of similar size spotted during harvesting. After measuring and weighing, it was discovered that the fruit beat the former heaviest blueberry by over 4 grams. The previous world record was for a 16.20g blueberryberry grown in Western Australia in 2020.

“Eterna as a variety has a really great flavor and consistently large fruit,” Costa Group’s Brad Hocking, one of the growers, said. “When we picked this one, there were probably around 20 other berries of a similar size. “This really is a delightful piece of fruit. While the fruit is large, there’s absolutely no compromise on quality or flavor as would be expected when developing a premium variety blueberry.”

“We are always looking to develop new varieties that improve on the current benchmark and meet evolving customer requirements,” Costa Berries International horticulture manager, George Jessett said, adding that the company develops on average one to two new varieties of blueberries of global commercial value each year.
