Tuesday’s election in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, which featured a rare race between two serving members of Congress, saw Flores fall short to Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, a three-term representative for Texas’ 15th congressional district, chose to run in the recently redistricted 34th congressional district, which includes his current residence and most of his support base in urban San Antonio.
Gonzalez sees himself as a centrist Democrat who occasionally disagrees with the party’s positions on border security and domestic energy policy.
As the wife of a U.S. Border Control agent and an immigrant from Mexico, Flores emphasized her Christian religion, border security, and economic issues during her campaign.
The Gonzalez campaign came under criticism in October for manipulating a photo of Flores to make her look more scary while brandishing a gun.
Earlier on Tuesday, Flores tweeted a photograph that had been altered to depict a red wave with the caption “TODAY’S FORECAST,” indicating his belief that Republicans will likely win a majority of the state’s elections.
However, early election returns indicate that Democrats are holding up better than anticipated, winning close races, and maintaining competitive districts.
Flores, who was born in Burgos, Tamaulipas, Mexico, in 1986, relocated to the US when she was six years old. After winning a special election in June, Flores became the first Mexican-born US House member, creating history in the process.
When Flores won a special election in June, shocking the political establishment by turning her district red for the first time in 150 years, it sparked a national discussion about the growing trend of Hispanic voters leaning Republican.
After the race was declared against her early on Wednesday morning, Flores thanked people who had “invested” in her campaign.
