In an apparent jab at President Biden and her former boss, former President Trump, Nikki Haley, the newly-nominated Republican presidential candidate, called on Wednesday for mandatory “mental fitness testing” for lawmakers over 75. Speaking at a rally in Charleston, South Carolina, to launch her 2024 presidential campaign, Haley listed a long list of political commitments, including establishing term limits for Congressmen and toughening up on illegal immigration.

However, it was her promise to require cognitive tests of elder officeholders that highlighted the main thrust of her campaign, which was that the United States needs a younger leader after having previously chosen two of the oldest men to hold the office.
The perpetual politician will eventually retire in the America I envision, according to Haley. “Term restrictions for Congress and required mental health screenings for elected officials over 75 years old”
Her comments are in line with a growing belief in both parties that their standard-bearers — Trump for Republicans and Biden for Democrats — are simply too elderly to hold onto the White House. By the time he was hypothetically sworn in again as president, Trump would be 78 and Biden would be 82.
Republicans in particular have questioned Biden’s cognitive state frequently, capitalizing on a number of mistakes to claim that he is not mentally competent to hold the office of president.
In a video uploaded online on Tuesday, Haley declared her candidacy for president, becoming the first significant Republican to take on Trump, who is once again vying for the GOP nomination. Later this week, she is anticipated to visit Iowa and New Hampshire, the first two states to host Republican primary contests.
Even though Haley is one of the early contenders for the 2024 election, she still has a difficult road ahead of her if she wants to win her party’s nomination. Trump continues to be the GOP primary’s presumptive front-runner for the time being, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis emerging as the most competitive challenger. Meanwhile, Haley’s support remains stuck in the single digits.
