VA Mother Arrested And Charged After 6-Year-Old Child Brings Firearm To School

Last month, a 6-year-old kid shot and critically injured an elementary school teacher in Newport News, Virginia. Now, the mother of another 6-year-old in Virginia has been accused after her child took a firearm to school.

According to a press release from the City of Norfolk, police responded around 3:30 p.m. to a complaint of a pupil with a firearm at Little Creek Elementary. By the time cops arrived, the pistol had already been confiscated by school employees. Skye Barnes says WRIC that she learned from another mom that the child who brought the gun had threatened to shoot her daughter, a classmate.

“Being able to procure the pistol and bring it to school—that might have been a lot worse,” Barnes observes. She adds that she first learned of the event about 5:30 p.m. that day through an automated message from school principal Cheryl Coghlan.

“Today afternoon, a pupil was discovered in possession of a weapon in the school,” Coghlan’s message stated. “The instructor proceeded swiftly to warn me, at which point I enacted emergency protocols, including phoning Norfolk police,” Coghlan continued.

There were no injuries recorded. According to Michelle Washington, a spokesperson for Norfolk Public Schools, police arrived on the scene after students had been dismissed for the day, and the school board is considering a budget plan that would allow for the hiring of more security officers as well as the purchase of a weapons detection system.

Meanwhile, the child’s mother, 35-year-old Letty Lopez, has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and allowing youngsters access to a loaded pistol. She was released on a criminal summons. According to CNN, this is the fourth instance of a 6-year-old carrying a gun to school this year.
