Pelosi Tells Late Night Audience Dems Will Hold Control Over House After Midterms

Democrats will hold the majority in the House following the upcoming midterm elections, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She told talk show host Stephen Colbert that her party will win more seats and reminded him, while making a joke, that former President Donald Trump is “not on the ballot now.”

The California Democrat said on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Monday night, “I believe that we will win the – hold the House, and we will hold the House – by gaining more seats.” “We won the forty seats, but once Trump came on the ballot, we suffered several losses. Despite losing some of the Trump-affiliated districts, we managed to cling onto enough seats to keep the House.

He’s not yet on the ballot, she continued. Did I really just mention his name? I wasn’t intending to.

“Perhaps you could bleep that out,” she said in response to Colbert’s announcement that “we’ll have the videotapes fumigated.”

The “prognosticators” had expected a “huge red wave,” Colbert said, but it still looks like the Republicans will win the House. Pelosi disagreed.

“We started right immediately to prepare for the next election in terms of organization when we won in 2020, and again, with fewer seats, but still retaining the House,” Pelosi added. “When you mobilize, you must control the area to win the election. The second “M” is inspiration, the third is money, and you have to achieve it with how we construct our messaging. We are thus preparing for the election. That occurred in December 2020.

Pelosi said that after Jan. 6, there was a “largest inflow of applicants” to step forward. “The magnificent variety of America came forth,” added Pelosi. “Young people, people of color, people of all decades, different cultures, and the rest.” They ignored the naysayers who claimed that they couldn’t win. They entered the battle with courage and certainty that they could prevail.

According to Pelosi, there is now a “new mentality” about whether the Democrats can win as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

We always had the mindset that we could prevail because we were aware that our democracy was at stake, she continued. “Our world was up for election. In this election, more women’s issues were on the ballot than in typical majorities.

She said that she doesn’t trust polls and that the candidates are “doing extremely well in their districts” in response to Colbert’s comment that they don’t support what she was saying.

Given that she hails from Maryland, a “horse racing state,” Pelosi likened the election to a race. When you’re in the lead in Maryland, which we think we are, you’re in the lead. “We made the turn, and you’re in the stretch,” she added. Voting begins even before the election, which is in five weeks from today. You whip the lead when you’re in the lead and in the stretch. We are whipping the lead to assure a Democratic triumph, and that is what we are doing.
